If we deport the illegals, then who will pick the vegetables?
The Age of Aquarious
or “the water bearer”
what is a “water bearer”?
a water bearer was a job. an occupation.
the job was to go and fetch water for people who didn’t want to fetch their own water
they say when you carry your own water, you appreciate every drop
but what about the rest of us?
do we truly appreciate every drop of water?
i had just learned about the concept of a water bearer the day before i took a trip to a big city…
as we were pulling into downtown, i noticed a man standing on a street corner, holding up a bottle of water. by his feet was a big cooler, presumably full of ice cold water bottles
and my jaw hit the floor, because i had two very conflicting feelings about this man.
on the one hand, he struck me as a street hustler
but on the other hand, i recognized and respected the simple genius of his water hustle
his water hustle was as old as the art hustling
He is the modern day water bearer,
hustling in the age of indoor plumbing and refrigeration
But enough about water,
Lets talk about food…
Do you get your food from a grocery store?
Theres a big supply chain behind much of the food you eat
Let start with animal protein.
Do you personally know any ranchers or farmers?
Do you know the state of iowa has a population of 18,000,000 pigs
But only 3,000,000 people?
And yet, you will never see a pig in iowa, because they live their entire life in CAFOs
CAFO: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations
Emphasis on “Concentrated”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concentrated_animal_feeding_operation
These pigs live their entire lives from birh to death in these industrial scale pig feeding operations
I want you to know that pigs are highly intelligent animals, that are on par with dogs, and in fact some people keep pigs as pets.
So while eating pork is popular in our culture,
Every culture had food taboos
Eating beef is taboo in India
Eating dogs and cats is taboo in Indiana
Anyway, these “CAFO’s” employ people who are probably transient and illegal.
They are out in the middle of nowehere, the work is horrible, you “never don’t” smell like pig shit and urine
the workers at least get to go home between shifts,
The pigs never get a breath of fresh air
They live their entire life, every breath, over a manure pit
But the workers just come and go.
These workers aren’t “lifers”
They aren’t “family farmers” going back 5 generations…
These are workers that were doing different work before, and will be doing different work later…
So on the one hand, you may celebrate that the illegals are being deported,
And you may celebrate when even more illegals self-deport and leave the USA…
Who will feed your pigs?
I actually know a man who works in a CAFO… about to retire after like 30 years
His mom is an illegal…
He was born here… and he’s almost retirement age
If you eat pork, esp at chain stores, then that supply chain is being maintained by the adult child of an illegal
Actually, i know this guys mom too. She’s awesome. Grew up in Mexico, came to Cali on vacation, fell in love with a white guy fresh out of prison. They were married until he died a few years ago. Shes not well herself. Dementia, in a home… she tried numerous times to be legal but somehow her paperwork always “got lost” after she submitted it.
And shes a devout Christian,
Goes to church every sunday
Her son teaches sunday school when hes not working in a CAFO
Actually, he texts me sermons and bible discussions every day
I can share some here if anyone wants
Anyway, in theory this guy is the son of an illegal, and his citizenship is now in question
He won’t be working in CAFO forever, but who will take his place when he leaves?
Will it be you?
Will it be your children or grandchildren?
TLDR: jewish guy owns kosher slaughter house, employs mostly illegals.
Trump thinks he deserves clemency but why?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Rubashkin
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postville_raid
The midwest has several of the worlds largest pork slaughterhouses.
Highly automated, high tech
they say “how a society now treats its own animals, is how that society will soon treat its own people”
These slaughterhouses need a constant supply of new laborers, because the nature of the work is extremely repetitive, which causes predictable problems like “carpel tunnel syndrome”
A worker in these slaughterhouses has a target on his back after 4-5 years, to get rid of the workers that they know will soon be having medical problems that require medical care and so worker will be unable to work anyway…
these slaughterhouses hire in waves
30 years ago, it was what we called Mexicans but was anybody south of border
Then it was Bosnians, white muslims. Supposedly refugees from war torn country, but somehow refugees came from both sides of conflict.
Thats convenient. Create a crisis. Force refugees to flee to USA, then offer them temp jobs in packinghouse
Then they came from the Congo,
hard working refugees, no doubt, just dying to do the grunt work that those Bosnians were too lazy to do…
One day i was in the state of Mississippi and i saw a massive John Deere tractor coming down the road toward me
And as it got close enough, i noticed the operator was a very old black man. I wondered if he owned the tractor, or if he was just a hired hand.
Thats the beauty of America…
But heres the thing about “freeing the slaves” by giving them the illusion of control of a brand new tractor…
And the slaves just packing up their tools and just leaving and not coming back ….
In the ag industry, there is much “produce” that will rot on the vine if its not harvested at a very specific time…
The “migrants” who pick the fruits and vegetables “migrate” to where the work is.
You only harvest for a while, then theres no more harvest work in that area, so the workers are forced to move, or migrate
These workers come and go, and you barely notice them,
But what if one day these migrant workers don’t come around anymore?
Who will pick the cotton?
Who will get to drive the shiney new tractor?
We have programs for temporary farm workers.
If the people of a nation will not work a job, that means the job's design is unsuitable or it's pay is. Thats the free market. We have thousands upon thousands of white collar jobs that are 95% busy work, and the other 5% just got replaced with AI for many of them. Amazon just laid off 14k, more are coming from amazon and other companies. People will figure out how to do jobs that involve labor without exploiting a lower class and using a mess of semi-legal practices.
I do wish we had better standards for how we treat farm animals. They are Gods creatures and deserve to be shepherded well. It's already unfortunate enough that we need them nutritiously, we can and should provide a safe comfortable life while they grow... Perhaps this would be easier to improve if we only let Americans have ownership of anything related to US food production.
Highly repetitive work? R-O-B-O-T-S. Just like Amazon is doing,
Ranching is better than agriculture for workers. Just eat meat!
Well, use to be, you would find a local farmer bout every so many miles with, this or that amount of livestock, some small, some medium and others large. Since they chased out, bought out, hiked feed up, taxed and regulated to the ground, most all the small farms who were spread all over and many of the medium ones as well, all you got for the majority of our food are the mega farms with super condensed pens full and cranking them out like any other conveyor belt who don't give much thought to quality, just quantity, as long as they pass inspection. So, what do you suggest because, I am in no way going to be a vegetarian. Heck, my grandpa even had a small heard of 4 f cows and 1 bull that they would cull 1 or two off a year depending on the calves born and that would feed the family all year. There sure are a LOT of people demanding gov assistance out there that would do well with taking up those jobs. Start promoting the work and many of them will "migrate" to the areas where there is work to be had... better than being stuck in a concrete jungle waiting for your gov assistance to come in each month.
The Jungle.
You sir, are educated.
Horrifying descriptions. So what's your solution.
The economy of scale and return on investment dictates increasing stark conditions for livestock. Getting rid of usury (loans at interest as a monetary system) would relieve a lot of that burden. Rotating jobs would relieve some of the stress for workers. Using that labor as payback for misdemeanors as an alternative for fines or jail time would provide some grateful workers. I would rather we find ways to take care of our needs without having to import workers from third world countries. It just seems to be the moral thing to do, somehow.
Also, in comms water = information. Information flows like water. It can be stored like water, and it can be poured out like water.
