…or the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, some streaming service(s), online porn, or online gaming. There’s more things to distract the masses than before and on a much larger scale.

The younger population gen x, and gen z, are totally disillusioned to these collapsing systems. Many have worked very hard for many years , and have nothing to show for it. Schools used to teach people how to save, and invest over time. After the mid eighties almost none taught it. The big boys do not want people financially competent, it becomes harder to take advantage of.
There are a lot more NPC's than we ever considered possible.
