As a history buff, I recently learned that fifers were not merely ornamental soldiers who provided marching music. They had a more serious role than that. Fifers were paired (or banded) with drummers (it's where we get the term "band" for any musical group), and together they took orders from their commander, played music that could be heard heard over the battlefield, and communicated tactical moves, such as "flanking move" or "hold the line" etc.
Like many, I had always thought that fifers and drummers were there for morale... nope, they had a tactical use back when there were no field radios or GPS.
Americans are the most compassionate people on Earth. But if you mess with us we will cross an icy river on Christmas night to kill you while you sleep. Then we'll commission an iconic painting to memorialize it.
great reminder of victory that came one battle at a time, there’s losses, but victory
the captured German mercenaries were mostly from Hesse-Kassel. Hesse was then a German state headed by King George III’s brother-in-law, “Landgrave” (Landgraf = a duke) Frederick II
Kinda looks like we have been fighting British-financed Prussians nonstop since 1776. I am now convinced that we have been fighting since 1776 with only a brief public pause from 1783-1811. The Revolutionary War never really ended, it just moved into the shadows; and it continues today.
Imagine if King George (circa 1776) was told that one day the whole "British Empire" and all its Royal Wealth worldwide would be controlled by an American President (and C-I-C) with Scottish ancestry born in New York.
Note that the German state of Hesse's largest city was Frankfurt, Germany; it is the current HQ of the EU bank, EU intelligence (MI-6 transplant), and EU military being stood up (from NATO remnants operating there). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesse
Frankfurt during the 1960s to 1990s developed into one of the major cities of West Germany. As of 2016, 12% of the total population of Hesse lived in the city of Frankfurt.
this is a long fight! excellent, thoughtful commentary on what America’s been up against…interesting about Hesse, Frankfurt, HQ of EU bank.
what a thought! he might keel over! “Imagine if King George (circa 1776) was told that one day the whole "British Empire" and all its Royal Wealth worldwide would be controlled by an American President (and C-I-C) with Scottish ancestry born in New York.”
When warriors, usually, took a break (Washinton made a decision-according to the book 1776; I believe, and decided to attack). A huge turning point in the war.
Yup and my 13 Yo ggggrand father james allen was a fifer in one of those boats.

A reminder that God intervened in the founding of the US.
