The problem with removing all the Somali's from my NE Minneapolis neighborhood is that I'll no longer be able to make them extremely uncomfortable by letting my dogs walk right up to them on the sidewalk or park.
The Somali kids are largely fascinated by dogs (And I have two huge, 185lb fluffy Newfoundlands which kids are typically very interested in) so they immediately want to say hi to them.
The parents who typically follow Shafi'i teachings hate and fear dogs and find them to be filthy animals that should not be interacted with. So me being the asshole that I am, I always make it a point of walking my dogs close to Somali groups in our local park or the sidewalk, to the point of crossing the road if they're walking on the other side of the street.
I find it endlessly amusing to watch the parents freak out and yell at their kids while giving me and my dogs terrified looks. I will miss that greatly.
And it is sad, but probably some are on vacation-or should be and others may have taken Christmas and New Years day off. But some HAVE to work or the work won't get done.
