His nephew, Edward Bernays, was also a psychologist, but studied the psychology of the group.
He was hired by advertisers in the 1920's and 1930's to come up with an advertising campaign to convince women to start smoking.
He was hired by the US government to come up with the slogan "Make the world safe for democracy" to be used to convince Americans to support going to war in World War 1. That campaign slogan has been used in many other wars since.
He was also responsible for finding a term to replace "propaganda." In the 1920's, it was normal to use the word propaganda, but it began to have a negative connotation because it was becaming obvious that various governments were using it to manipulate the thinking of the people.
So, he came up with the term "public relations" to replace "propaganda."
