If I remember correctly the protection we gave Greenland was more along the lines of “You are being protected. Please do not resist.”
And the officials who signed the documents was more along the lines of “Sign these or we’ll find someone who will.”
And just like Mexico, we gave it back.

Ah.... not quite. The actual contract was made by someone who did not have the correct authorization. ..... But for all intends and purposes, Denmark being under occupation, could not do very much about it ....
