Leviticus 11:1-8
And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat. Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.
why do you think in modern terms and science and awareness would God forbade eating Rabbits and Camels, Pigs I understand, a lot of parasites can be transferred via pig meat in desert and warm climate...
God explains exactly why in the text. No need for the speculations of post-modernist humanists.
It is so that Israel would be holy, i.e. set apart and distinct from the other nations. It discouraged table fellowship and intermarriage with idolaters who regularly sacrificed and ate swine, camel, dog, rat, etc.
If Israel completely assimilated and ceased to be separate there would be no Messianic lineage, no promised Messianic Return, no Resurrection of the dead, and no future Messianic Kingdom.
Idk, I just know that under the new covenant nothing is considered unclean any more. It is possible that the purpose for considering those animals unclean was ultimately typological rather than a literal issue of cleanliness. In the old covenant they were not allowed to consume "unclean" animals just as they were not to mingle with foreigners, and in the new covenant nothing was considered unclean anymore, and the (believing) Jews were to be one with the gentile believers. There is a passage that shows this typology (in Acts 10) where Peter had a vision where he was told to partake of animals that he perceived as "unclean" and was told "What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common [unclean]." He then met with Cornelius at Caesarea, and there were many gentiles, "And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean."
