I don't think it's about NATO. America wasn't attacked so article 5 isn't triggered. And it's easy to explain not assisting another nation's aggression, which is how the anti-Trump faction is portraying it.
I'm thinking it will be used to direct popular anger away from Trump and towards European leadership once the European petrol prices skyrocket. It cements the blame. They'll be fighting mad at their "elected" officials at insane petrol prices, just like Americans were mad at Carter because of the gas lines.
The anger can also be the lever to turn the Ukraine situation around, as the Euro nations could get plenty of Russian oil and gas today, except for their self-imposed, self-righteous sanctions against Russia to support Ukraine. This is when the story of Ukraine sabotaging the NORD pipeline comes back, and the way to cheaper energy for Europe is clear: drop Zelensky and warm up to Russia and the US.
