You know who would really like this? Airports. People that would come to airports to see their families off would more than likely park in the short-term garages, and when they went to the gate they would likely buy food/drink/snacks - then they would leave. So - more food/drinks purchased and more expensive parking paid for = profit percentages paid to the airports. They might add more short-term parking, but it would bring more money cycling in all day.
nice idea! someday⦠so on and on in this thread, said that airports get too crowded and riffraff come in and pick pocket at big airports. So to avoid that and get your idea going., we just have number of guests entering in the gate area with each traveler and then no problem (reservations)
That actually existed at some point. I know I sent my daughter (I think she was 12 or 13) to visit family on the East Coast years ago and she was traveling alone (direct flight). I had to get a non-boarding boarding pass and go through security like a normal traveler. It was really easy.
I also know that (at least in the past) people could set up business meetings in some of the bigger airline lounges. They were primarily designed to have people from all over going to one central hub and then fly back to their cities. There were ways for locals to get a pass to attend the meeting as well. I don't know if that is still a thing or not, but I saw it sometime in the late 20teens.
β70s and β80s flights memorable for me, nice you could meet friends at the gate then!
thanks for the Cheryoff reference.

those seem to be the best days, maybe somebody can run for Congress or something and make this happen again
