Within 10 to 14 days, Iran won’t be able to store oil and will have permanent long term damage to oil wells for extracting oil. Oil wells perform poorly after you stop the flowing process.
Iran exports oil, but it also imports gasoline and diesel. Iran lacks the ability to refine enough of their own oil into gasoline and diesel. So very soon Iran will be running out of fuel everywhere.
The U.S. crude oil production averages 13.5 million barrels per day in 2026.
U.S. crude oil consumption is about 20.6 million barrels per day in 2026.
We have a net import dependency. The U.S. relies on 7 million b/d of net imports to meet demand, with Canada supplying roughly 4 million b/d.
Why on Earth do we have 60 crude oil tankers heading to the USA to "fill up", when they each hold about 2 Million barrels of oil? Where does that extra 120 Million barrels of oil come from?
As of early 2026, the U.S. strategic oil reserve held 415 million barrels, or about 58% of its capacity. The reserve can release oil at a maximum rate of 4.4 million barrels per day, enough to fill up 2 of these VLCC ships per day. There goes 1/3rd of our strategic reserves.
We don't have the extra capacity to sell oil to the world. If we're lucky, we have enough to be almost self-sufficient.

We have a surplus of light crude, we produce more than our refineries can refine.
We have a deficit of heavy crude, because many of our refineries require heavy crude.
To complicate it further, just because we import crude doesn't mean we don't immediately turn around and export the product refined from crude.
And the 20+ million barrels a day of consumption are petroleum product, not necessarily crude oil.
So the same exact thing that has already happened to the Gulf countries. And to a much lesser extent the Saudis.
