The last "major earthquake" in California was the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (magnitude 7.9), so this assessment has been true for at least the last 120 years. (I'm sure the researchers have seismic data going back 1000 years, before Europeans arrived on the North American continent.)
" Northridge 6.7 blind thrust earthquake was beneath the San Fernando Valley. The shock lasted approximately 8 seconds and achieved a peak ground acceleration of over 1.7 g. It is the largest recorded earthquake in the area's history, slightly surpassing the Mw 6.6 1971 San Fernando earthquake."
"The earthquake caused uplift across 5,000 km2 (1,900 sq mi) including the San Fernando Valley. Global Positioning System observations indicate the maximum uplift was 70 cm (28 in)."

Who can really know? While I was growing up in Puget Sound, we all wondered if Mt. Baker would erupt, and in 1980 it was Mt. St. Helens that won the race.

I truly fear an eruption of the Yellowstone caldera, but there is nothing to do about it.

The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was a 6.9 and was pretty bad. It hit San Francisco and followed the San Andreas fault south. The aftershocks were terrifying for days after the quake. Sixty three people died and over 3000 injured, with severe infrastructure damage.
Down deep we think So Cal is so ruined that it needs some kind of dramatic karma to be cleansed. Good thing it is not up to mere mortals.
