What’s hilarious about the word is that it actually, literally, still just means “blacks”, but if it was mispronounced, and with negative emotional connotation attached.
“How about we all stop stabbing this old social scab and heal?”
I miss how this crap actually seemed to be getting better for a while before Obama, or maybe that was all imaginary, or a setup. Hopefully soon, though. Positive signs again.
From what I remember, it started with Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott in the early 1990s. That was the first time I remember someone publicly losing their position and being removed from society for saying “the word”. Before then, it just had negative connotations. The media really does have a lot of influence over people, and acts as a way around our freedom of speech rights.
What was funnier about that was that … I don’t remember if this was her or someone else, but someone wasn’t even using it derogatorily, just acknowledging that the word existed, and actually possibly even defending against its use.
Didn’t matter. The cudgel had been crafted, and was used against anyone who wasn’t sided with the cabal.
The 'word' here in SA thats Taboo and a Criminal offence is to call a black person(Unless you're black) is the Term "Kaffir"...Its Hate speech because thats what the blacks were called under Apartheid...Crazy thing is, the term means "none believer" which comes from the word kāfir in Arabic....Got nothing to do with Colour.....
But probably dates back to Arab enslavement. There was (I think) a proscription against enslaving fellow Muslims, so all slaves would be called "Kaffir" regardless of race. This may explain the prominence of Islam in countries like Nigeria and Tanzania: convert and avoid slavery. Such a complex history.
