Trump exaggerates / bends the truth and straight up fibs all the time, if it's to serve a purpose. When the media asked "did you know about a specific credible threat by Iran" aboard AF1 he straight up lies to them for national security purposes.

That said, it's very possible he is making this up because there's no way to disprove it and it serves the purpose of propping up his current #1 priority (passing the SAVE act)
