Yes they can be, it depends on what item you are printing. Some people have like 50 3D Printers and produce parts for other businesses as well.
You can make coin organizers, cable organizers, and just pretty much a huge amount of things.
If your curious as to what other things check out: reddit.com/r/functionalprint it is a great resource of showing what you can do with them.
Don’t have the time to read through the entire post, but 3D printers are a great way to make anything you need in your household. Have 2 of them for a small business I run with my cousin and exclusively make things that save space, hold items, etc. Don’t know of any American made 3D Printers though. Definitely a fun hobby too.

The hospital I work at has back order issues EVERY DAY here, most of the items I’m requesting and needing are for surgical cases too, so you’d think they would get them in. But nothing has been done, anytime I ask, “xxx items is just on back order, nothing we can do”.
Winding down? Eh wouldn’t say so, more or less have been at a constant workload of 30 surgieres per day since we re-opened electives cases after the corona shutdown.
