Make sure the P - Persistent mode is not on. With P option on the planes stay on the map.

I have been wondering the same thing.

If you have set the (P) Persistent setting it shows all for the time you are looking. Anyway, I think that is the way it works. Trying removing that setting and see if the #'s drop.
