The sun goes through cycles of activity, high output periods (maximums) characterized with a lot of sunspots which generate energy, resulting in heat. At the end of the cycle the sunspot activity reaches a nadir, with reduced energy output/heating. That’s the minimum. Every 11 years, roughly is one of these cycles, with a solar maximum and minimum. We are entering cycle 25 now.
There are also grand solar cycles, coming every 350 or so years, and super grand cycles, spanning millennia. They follow the same pattern of high and low activity, just on a more powerful scale.
The last Grand Solar Minimum was in the late 1600s early 1700s and its effects lasted many decades.
