In settings, turn off “view last leg only” or something like that, put in the hex key for this aircraft, and you will see the last location. Here is a photo I just uploaded at maga.win
NP. Not much help, but if accurate, looks like it circled for a bit then just stopped transponding, unfortunately not near an airstrip that I could see
Edit, actually not too far from Forbes field as u/deiceman noted earlier
The emergency codes are next to each other on the dials. People occasionally do something dumb like passing thru another emergency code which triggers the alarms. For example if you temporarily lost coms (not that uncommon in some planes that I've flown) and then they come back and you pass thru the emergency code on your way to your new squak (by choosing the "wrong" digit to change first), it triggers the ATC alarm. Decent chance that it's nothing.
I've squawked 7600 before when I had an alternator failure in a single engine and lost electricals including com. Transponders can still be read even when voice communications are much too weak to transmit. Could be the guy accidentally dialed in 7700 by accident in that situation. It does happen occasionally.
There is an urban legend that is taught to all new pilots about ATC telling the pilot to "Squawk altitude" which means his Mode-C is turned off. The trainee pilot, VFR level at 7500, dutifully squawks 7500. When he lands he has a nice contingent of police waiting to arrest the hijackers.
No idea if that actually ever happened or not, but it makes for good hangar talk. So I suppose if that story were true, and if the pilot wasn't particularly good at maintaining level flight, he could use the same logic to squawk 7700. Seems a bit far fetched, but then again I wouldn't have believe a US election could be stolen either...
Just find it odd the plane used emergency squawk and now another is flying low circling area it went off radar. Praying we don’t hear anything in news tomorrow
I’ve never seen a 7700 squawk. I reconfirmed it by looking up again the emergency squawk signs. I knew it was one but I had to re look Bc I was like oh shit
Used for hijackings among other things, if I recall correctly. A great way to suddenly meet new and interesting friends as you find a bunch of fighter planes suddenly deciding they need to get up close and personal..
Excellent, thanks for the correction. I guess emergency is something generic enough that it doesn't fit in the other categories, but significant enough that it warrants exceptional handling.
No not normally? 7700 is for an "emergency" 7600 is used for lost comms, and 7500 is used for hijacking of the aircraft. These are standard. It is possible that the crew have inadvertently selected 7700 it does happen but not often and is quickly resolved from a call by air traffic.
None yet thank god. Looks like others who didn’t pass out as quickly as I did kept an eye on it and it was probably either an accident. A test. Or it had a minor plane problem and it landed at base and handled the issue. I was honestly worried only because of the crashes that have been happening.
I wish I understood all of this and could look this stuff up on my own and see what you see. I am reading the comments trying to understand and hoping that more information is coming as this post gets traction so I am commenting so that it is easy to find later.
Idk it’s off radar now and there’s another plane I’m the area flying in circles around the area at lower altitude. Hoping everything is okay
That’s what I’m hoping since I read that too. But with all the recent helicopter crashes it just alerted me a bit. Could be nothing. Hope it’s nothing
Probably just seeing if ATC is awake.
Hopefully if not. I’m praying for the pilots and crew

Yeah. All we can do is pray

Did not know this. Thank you :)

Prayers don't hurt

The Hercules that was circling the area is grounded at a nearby airport now, as I see it.
Yes, that’s the second time it has landed there, it landed earlier for about 5 minutes before.
Back in the air right now

Yes I just saw that. Thank you :)

It seems to have disappeared. It was dropping altitude. Now I don’t see it
Will u keep us updated?
Yes I’ll keep an eye on it.
It’s off radar but there’s another plane circling area it was in at low altitude. Idk

Lmk if you find anything pls. Hope they are ok.
Right now I have no idea. Just hope it was a mistake put in or a drill of sorts.

Any updates?
None that I can see yet

Why are people constantly looking at air traffic?
Hijacked is 7500
I stand corrected.
It just showed up again then went off. I do see nearby planes heading to the area. Hope everything okay
Posted it. But it’s gone now. It was at 2600ft and lowering and now I can’t see it
Rosecrans Air NG base is where it keeps landing and taking off from
Thank you fren
