Whoa! Mayor of Colorado City, TX just resigned after making this FB post. TLDR: The government owes you nothing, and you’re on your own for this cold snap.

Exactly. This is why we pay taxes. They take our money so that we can have water, electricity, etc. We have paid for these services with our tax dollars. So in this case, YES the gov't DOES owe us these things. WE PAY FOR THEM.
I agree that we should all be more self-sufficient. But my gosh what does he expect people to do? Stores are out of everything, here. I had a feeling something was going to happen like this last month, so I stocked up. But not everyone can afford to stock up. If you're living paycheck to paycheck, you buy what you need for a week or two at a time.
And these people are fine with the gov't taking all of our tax money and telling us we can't open our businesses, but heaven forbid they make sure we have electricity and clean water.
I absolutely agree with you all. When I think of a handout I’m thinking more like welfare type stuff. The things we pay for are far from a handout and helping those who can’t help themselves is something we should all try to do.
this is just a calculated misapplication of this sentiment used against the taxpaying hardworking orioles who typically hold this position correctly toward people who mooch off of others
Exactly. I pay my taxes and always pay my water bill and electric bill. This is not mooching. Mooching is expecting goods and services for free. This is expecting the service and products that I pay good money for. This is expecting our electrical infrastructure to be up to par. We found out that our legislators told the electric people to winterize our systems back in 2011 after there were some issues like this. They ignored the order and didn't do it. It's ridiculous.
No state tax in Texas though.
We have high property taxes and sales tax. Plus we pay for our electricity and water. We are paying for a product every month. Part of that contract is that we receive reliable electricity and clean water.
Figured as much.
I know! With all the regulations, we can't put a big windmill in our neighborhood backyards or go around chopping down random trees for firewood. We have to pay $$$ to dig a well for water, and everything has to be approved by the gov't. It's insane! While it is possible to go off grid, it is very difficult because how do you work and make $? Most jobs are closer to urban areas, so that makes a lot of people stuck. And even with a mostly self-sufficient lifestyle, you still need to be able to buy things. Ammo, gasoline, flour, sugar, salt, etc.
The government has made self sufficiency very very difficult.
Amen to you and everybody else who preceded you on this thread.
This country and this world desperately need more self-sufficiency, both for its own purpose, and for the character it build...but the time to promote it is not when it's 10 below, like, "Surprise and Fuck You!"
Doing so now, in that way, is nothing less than a psy-op attack on self-sufficiency, making it seem disastrous and callous, when it's fully the opposite.
I completely agree! It's insanity. My husband are seriously considering getting some land and homesteading. Anything to lessen our reliance on the government. The problem is, we still need to live close enough to his work. So it's really hard to find a rural enough area. Our area is exploding, so there are a lot of places that used to be very rural, but suburban neighborhoods are moving in. It's difficult to know where we could go where that wouldn't happen.
It looks like he couldn't even be bothered to read his post before publishing it.
