Not a basketball, but those things get pretty big. My guess is Joe walked right up among the mics and they had to quickly scramble it around to readjust. Thats why its initially behind, and later in front. I assume the mics are all different sizes, but in this case it does help the illusion.
When it is behind his elbow it's huge: about 4-5 times the size of his elbow. How can that possibly be an illusion? Things look larger when they are near the camera... it's near the camera then? If it's not huge, then it's not really behind his elbow.
