I’m thinking they can focus it, too. Like a controlled beam. Can make it as wide or as narrow as needed, so as to target only the object(s) you choose.

What's at play is newton's laws. A force in motion stays in motion. If power got cut when the rudder has the ship turning starboard, rudder is stuck and the prop, even with power cut, will still keep moving for awhile. Even if the prop stopped, the ship would still drift.
What likely happened here is black out during an adjustment meant the rudder was stuck turnt towards starboard, and the still moving prop helped to move the ship onto the sandbank on the side, where it eventually slowed down and idled.
There are no significant currents or flow of water, it's a canal, not a running river.
The water is static and the only flows are caused when lock gates are opened and refilled..
The other story is there was a big sandstorm (quite believable, look at the yellow haze around all pictures) which blinded the navigator and he veered a little right into the sand. It isn't really sideways if you look at a satellite view.
I don't buy that theory of the navigator getting blinded. With all the technical equipment and navigational tools, I bet it basically steers itself. I can believe the sandstorm, but not the other part.
Yeah. I’m no shippingfag, but sandstorms aren’t uncommon there, and just look at the incredible chaos this blockage has caused. No way that they haven’t ironed out the human factor and visibility issues when transiting this canal as much as (non) humanly possible.
As I said elsewhere, it wouldn't take much for this giant ship to get stuck. Look how little leeway there is. And if they had a power blackout, which of course is only their say-so, wouldn't that take out their instruments? Maybe it's like losing the power steering on your truck, only this vessal has immense momentum.

What (hear me out) if the ship lost power which caused the steering to go out happened because of a fault onboard. I've seen 2 ships run aground in a river heading to a marine terminal by me in the past 5 years. Granted it's not an everyday occurrence but it happens. When these lumbering giants lose power they drift.
