These strings allow the debt holder to control a lot more than a typical lender.
So, just because he is a lender, does not mean he has no control. He might not (or he might). You can't know for sure just based on the fact that it is debt and not equity.
With people like this, the "normal scenario" is usually not standard operating procedure for them.
