Devil Dogs is a name given to the Marines at Belleau Wood in 1918. Where the Marines fought with such tenacity and ferocity that the Germans referred to them as Hellhounds. Which would eventually morph into Devil Dogs as the Marines adopted the name.
Also where the line "Come on, you sons of bitches. Do you want to live forever?“ was immortalized. Allegedly Uttered by Two time Medal of Honor winner Daniel Daly.
Who was due to win a third Medal of Honor for his actions at Belleau Wood. But the pencil pushers thought awarding three Medals of Honor to one man was over excessive and unacceptable. So he got a Distinguished Service Cross instead.
Sabaton - Devil Dogs (official music video) Sabaton, for those who may not know, are a Swedish metal band who mainly write about wars and war heroes. This song in particular is from their most recent album, The Great War.
Welllll... Devil Dogs does not make any sense in German. I assume it originated from a mistranslation of the colloquial " Höllenhunde" which would be translated as Hellhounds. And note the date! not WWII but WWI !" In 1918, a U.S. recruiting poster headlined with the phrase Teufel Hunden put the story into full circulation across the country. Although the German expression was rare and oddly worded, and its source blurry at best, the nickname took a firm hold."

You only die once. Save the fear for the time it actually happens. Not something w a 99.99% survivable rate.
etc.

In the German it was teufel hunden, may not have spelled it right though.
There are no sources of this expression in German, just in English. The proper version would be "Teufelshunde"
Oh yeah, you're right, it was WW1.
Darn, I wish I could change the title.
