And people are free to call bison "buffaloes" if they want. It's an error so common, it's become literally acceptable to use in place of bison, at least among speakers unaware of the difference.

American Indians aren't really from India either. It's not that people don't know that. It's called common usage.
It is though. Maybe you and I know this, but I bet if you asked 100 random Americans what the difference is between a bison and a buffalo, you wouldn't get 25 correct answers.
