Used to be standard for most schools.

I would like to see more of it!! Someone has to control kids if the parents won't do it!

This happened to me on a few occasions as a child. I'm not convinced it was a bad thing. Not every potential harmful action should be avoided at all times.

For example, lets say a child eats poison. If you instill the fear of God in them for it, (with explanation) they are much less likely to eat that poison ever. Sure, it's a little PTSDish, but the memory is forever ingrained, and the child is forever safe from not only that poison, but ever wary of any poison.

Something being harmful does not equal something being evil. The entire purpose of pain from a biological perspective is teach us to not do something. Us using that system in a nondestructive manner to teach seems logical.

You see someone beating up a child. I see someone at least potentially teaching (details of the event unknown). At the least, no permanent damage is done, at least physically. And it is very likely that whatever event caused the punishment is unlikely to be repeated, which is the intent (presumably). I can't see into the hearts of the people doing the act, but the act itself is not necessarily evil. You believing that it must be evil doesn't make it so. It is only a statement of your personal moral code.

The parent is obviously ok with it. Are you trying to tell the parent what is appropriate with their child? Let them do them, you do you. That is the entire purpose of what we are fighting for; to not have people dictate the terms of our life choices (as long as those choices aren't a direct violation of someone else's rights).

Like I said, I didn't know the specifics. My point still stands, since it was made on principle and the assumptions were stated.

Hmmmm....why didn't the mother STOP it instead of recording it??? Almost sounds like the mother was in agreement, especially when the principal says something like....your Mama can bring any other child who disrespects her to me for the same discipline???? Something doesn't make sense with this story?

It doesn't seem right now, but it sure seems like people behaved better when this was commonplace. Truly, any discipline is good for kids as long as it is done with love. Corporal punishment does seem like it has more likelihood to backfire though.

Single mother = spoiled brat

Single father = neurotic weirdo

Two parent (mother and father). = best chance at normal kid

Allow me to say, as one who was paddled in school multiple times (deserved it), this is an effective measure, properly applied. I am not advocating abuse, and I understand the line of separation is not wide. Probably would get a few more at home once the folks found out. Some will say this is not necessary, but my experience is that children are compelled to push limits as far as they can. They need to learn that there is a limit that they may not pass. There is a supreme authority, and it is not them. Capital punishment should be rare, not usually needed after the first couple of applications. The child quickly learns that you mean business. Just my 2 cents.

You Cupcakes have a hard time distinguishing discipline and abuse! Spanking a child is not abuse, in fact the opposite is true. It's the non discipline that is abuse. Time Out does NOT work! You take away "one favorite toy" and think you have taught them a lesson when they simply turn to toy number 2 or their phone or their video games or their tv etc and simply wait you out. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you got this all screwed up and are a huge part of what is so wrong with young people today. I'll pray for you!

What exactly do you think it means in the Bible scripture of "Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him."?????? You are entitled to your own idea of how to raise your children, as for me, I'm sticking with God's instructions. A swat on the butt is hardly abuse, and it doesn't cause any permanent injuries. You are simply quoting the liberal handbook. Did you read that in "It takes a Village"?

Back when I was growing up, there were no "privileges" to be taken away. Parents are giving children too much.

All of the hundreds of people I attended school with were paddled at one time or another. Almost all of them that I still know have turned out great. One who got a lot of paddling is now a preacher, another is a deacon, and others had military careers or started successful businesses.

Paddling gets a child's attention. All other "punishments" given by liberals are useless.

Learn the difference between a spank on the rear and real child abuse.

They did this at our school growing up and honestly it was only handed out when students where out of control. I will say they didn't act up again and the classroom was able to maintain a learning environment. Granted life changes and abuse can happen.

Sounds like the principal is trying to encourage respect for the mom? If the mom is watching and has a problem with it, why isn't she objecting? Corporal punishment is a personal choice and IMO, a parent's right if they want to use it. However, it should be done as a correction and with love, for the desired outcome. Though not all of us had our paddlings that way.

  • Speak roughly to your little child
  • And beat him when it pleases
  • For he can thoroughly enjoy
  • The pepper when it pleases

Doesn’t the Bible say, “spank your children, it will not kill them. It might save them from Sheol.”

Of course, this principal is not this child’s parent so that’s a different situation, entirely, but spanking, in and of itself, is not something to be completely cast aside.

There are steps to proper disciplining.

Talk to them - 1st offense Take away privilege - 2nd offense, Spank, smack, or pinch - 3rd - 100th offense

My parents did not spank me for every offense, but children have to know that is a possibility. How many of you had the count to 3 punishment?

Children tend to push the envelope to see what they can get away with. This principal however, put quite a bit of force into the paddling and that was not appropriate.

That actually was stopped here in FL while I was in Elementary School. I'm 44, about to be 45, now. And I'm a born and bred FL resident. This is shameful and despicable.
