I remember reading that book in AP English in 1982. 1984 was only two years away and we discussed in class if there were any parallels to American society at that moment in time.
It was the early years of Reagan and he had gotten the hostages home, we had the Miracle on Ice which was a much needed boost to the National psyche after the Carter Malaise and the economy was roaring back to life after it seemed like forever with stagflation. USA! USA! was ok to chant again. We felt good by doing it. Patriotism was a thing again.
Russia and communism were enemy #1 and tee shirts had slogans on them like 'kill a commie for your mommie' and 'ayatollah assahola'.
My classmates and I came to the conclusion that something like that could never happen in America. America was good and couldnt be anything less. Our Constitution made it so. Everything was so black and white.
Hard to believe that was only 39 years ago. So much has changed. Infiltration not invasion. Insidious.
