This was basic 3rd grade grammar and diction before civilization and civil human behavior became RACIST!!

In my experience, most people with poor spelling, grammar and punctuation don't give a fuck. They don't care that their discourse is ambiguous or difficult to read and understand. Any attempt to educate or correct is seen as a personal insult. They will forever be unable to communicate accurately. They will wonder why their job applications are refused, their formal complaints ignored.

And before you play your "dyslexia" card, I have friend who is dyslexic and writes English so well that she became a teacher of English in a UK school. Dyslexia is not an impossible hurdle; you just have to work harder (and smarter).

People get so angry and say “why are you taking focus away from the real point of the post?” I ask... “why are YOU taking focus away from the point of the post by spelling horribly? Nobody wants to read words written by a fool who can’t learn basic spelling and homophones!”

You make a very good point. I've read some comments here where there is absolutely NO punctuation, their thoughts are in one long run-on sentence, and it seriously hurts my eyes to try and decipher what they're trying to say. A lot of their message literally gets lost when you go on to the next post because simple periods weren't used to separate sentences. That's not to say anyone needs to prepare a bullet-pointed presentation here, but simple 2nd grade grammar skills are enough to keep it legible.

The worst is when they say you are a shill or a troll or even worse those weirdos who start calling names and using words that nobody should use and going insane... they all have horrible spelling and lots of hate in their hearts. I know people in real life like this, they have good intentions in most cases, but generally cannot handle criticism and have trouble keeping jobs due to their angry streak.

That really makes me wonder if they weren't so hateful, would they articulate better? I can just imagine someone angrily typing away at a keyboard without a thought in their head as to their grammar or punctuation, the anger blinds them and they probably don't care about any of it, being so angry. You almost feel sorry for them....almost.

You feel bad only until the point they start name calling because you mentioned their spelling...

Also because they have no other defense for anything, ever. But seriously, it's not always easy being on the right because we see what's really going on, and it's disturbing and very hard to deal with sometimes (church has helped me a lot). But to be one of the blissfully ignorant who have no idea and defend their idiocy to such a degree, no thanks. My stepdaughter's boyfriend is like that and we can't stand him.

I work at a doctors office. If there are misspellings or grammar errors in the charts it looks sloppy, uneducated, and unprofessional. Especially when sending correspondence letters to other doctors offices.

The one that really makes people look dumb is using 'loose' instead of 'lose' and vice versa.

Loose = not tight Lose = not win

Yes! Loose vs Lose has become my pet peeve, and I'm annoyed enough that I actually DO grammar shame people over it.

That’s the absolute worse. When and how did that get started? I NEVER remember seeing that misspelling until the last few years. The words don’t even sound the same!

Suppose if you are going to complain about spelling. You should make sure you spell-check and grammar-check first. Here I fixed it for you. You are not trying to spell or grammar shame anyone. However, it is vital to get things right if you debate someone or try to convey an essential piece of info or an opinion. Even if you are not dumb, sometimes it looks that way. So here are a couple of essential hints just about spelling.

The words hear and here. The word hear contains the word ear. That one is easy. If you use the word to mean using your side head holes, use the word with the ear in it. Here is a place.

There, there and they are. There is a place. It has the word here in it, which is also a place. So use the word there if you are talking about a place. They imply ownership. You use this if talking about a group of people owning something. THEIR CAR. Their thought. Their opinion. It is a pronoun so that it can be tricky in today’s world. LOL. They are short, for they are. If the word you are talking about can be divided into those two words, use the apostrophe.

In late for work, but I will try to post some more tricks later. Again, not shaming. Sometimes people are just in a hurry. Sometimes they do not know the rules. Also, spell check is so easy if you are not sure. I am always thinking of easy ways to help people with these problems. Self-improvement is always good! I hope this info helps some friends. Moreover, if I wrote any misspellings or made grammar mistakes, I am only human, too!

I used to review/revise customer service correspondence (complaints) replies for a major bank. Please allow me to assist with some of the most common homonym errors. You hit some good ones, but also:

Accept and except - accept is to receive or make peace with; so you either accept the award or you accept that Biden cheated his way into office. Except is the root word of exception, as in not including - I brought everything except the kitchen sink.

To/Two/Too - To is describing the direction of something. We're going to the movies. Two is literally the number 2 written out. I'll have two slices of pizza. Too describes an overabundance of something - it's too cold to go outside, or there are too many kids in this kitchen.

Do/Due/doo doo - Do is the present tense of did - I do the dishes every day. Due is either being owed (he was due $7.00) or when something is expected (homework is due tomorrow). Doo doo is another way to say poop. :) Had to have a little fun with this.

Right/Write/Rite - Right is the opposite of left. It is also synonymous with correct. Being on the right is the right place to be. Write is when you put pen to paper and physically write something (also used with CDs/DVDs, as in write access). Rite a social custom or practice, or a religious act. Like being read your last rites, or a rite of passage.

Week and weak - week is the 7 day period from Sunday to Saturday. Weak is not having enough strength.

Its and It's - when conveying inanimate ownership, lose the apostrophe: his bicycle has cards in its spokes. The car needs its tires inflated. Use the apostrophe for the contraction It Is - It's raining outside, or it's about time.

And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE while we're on the topic of it's - NOT a replacement for There! THERE is a package on the front step - not IT'S a package on the front step. I hear that all the time and it is so incorrect.

I hope this helps someone :) also if you are in doubt, just look up "homonyms" and you're very likely to find the right spelling to use.

Yeah. I just posted a few because I was in a hurry. I was going to post more today but I got crapped on for posting what I did. I’m so tired of seeing the word looser instead of loser and I seen instead of I saw. Or I seen instead of I’ve seen. I trust a poster or commenter so much more if I know they can read and write. I’m not insulting anyone. Just trying to help people.

I try to explain the difference between the plural and possessive, but those who stick apostrophes on everything ending with an s just don't get it.
