As another poster said here, it is not the issue that I can use VPN or otherwise unblock it, it is the fact that I have to do it in a free and democratic country. At least that is what we are supposed to be.
The closest there is to a free country is the US and places in the middle of nowhere that have no external agency or force to restrict that freedom.
There are no genuinely free countries and that is in the process of changing, hence overt and out in the open censorship where in the past it was hidden and introduced through osmosis and gradual habituation, they are lashing out and unfortunately I don't think we have seen the last of it before this is all over and done with.
PS: people downvote on an emotional whim and 'just because' and 'muh feelings' and there certainly are DS shills here that are paid to push anything that has a positive effect on freedom and privacy down if they can get away with it...

Don't have VPN, but I switched to using OpenDNS instead of the providers own DNS which worked. So VPN would also do the trick, unless you hit another country which blocks.

I'm a Unix/network admin... a VPN and or a different DNS server will fix 95% of this stuff. They have to go full China and block IP traffic at the border routers to really stop anything. Even then its possible to get around most of it. The whole point of the design of IP is to make it hard to stop.
Look into encrypted DNS as well. If people running your internet are hostile or being threatened by hostile parties, then dont give them further avenues to attack you.
