This happened to my girlfriend. The young guy was texted, forgot to put oil back in. Much older car, at first the owner was all good. I will replace the engine. Then when he went to do that, he started shifting blame back our way.

Get a lawyer. Document all interactions. Make them fix it.

Ive been a mechanic for 30 years, and to be honest, there needs to be more details here before giving any advice on a course of action.

At the first sign of trouble, he should have stopped, switched off the engine and called the garage. They would have had the option of collecting the car or of telling him to risk driving it back.

By failing to give them the option at that point, he has assumed responsibility for any subsequent damage caused by the overheating.

Just my personal opinion but I think that the garage will not be liable (or only partly liable) for the repair costs.

As to what he should do - speak very nicely to the garage and determine what went wrong and the options for repair. If he's calm and polite, the garage might just help.

If he ran the engine for any length of time while it was overheating, it could have caused critical engine damage. They may have fixed the coolant leak or whatever caused engine to overheat, but that doesn't fix permanent engine damage.

i bought a car once and was to pick it up in 3 days so they can wash it, fill fluids, etc. Picked up the car and there was a loud banging noise from engine. Took it back, turned out a "mechanic" dropped a bearring and it ruined the entire engine. Since the car was on warranty they had to fix it and give me a rental in the meantime. Brother is a car insurance agent and told me from the work order I ended up with a brand new engine and transmission. I had that car for 200,000 miles. Friends would joke with me "you still have this same car?"

It sounds like the tube that feeds the coolant to the engine fell off or broke, and they put a whole new part on. But would they know the engine suffered damage at that point?

It’s called he got fucked and the best option is to find another shop.

Dealerships do it too. My work refused to listen to me and they got to double charge work.
