Wrong. It was because hemp threatened the paper industry and the guy who owned many of the newspapers ran a smear campaign, the birth of "yellow journalism" or as we call it today, FAKE NEWS.
It did though, because Anslinger and Hurst both rejected in congress and in the press (respectively) doctors opinion to congress that it was safe for consumption. You could say it was also a birthing of "Big Pharma" in that doctors got whipped by money.
that was part of the yellow journalism that hurst was printing in his papers.
he owned pretty much all the tree based paper production in the country, he was over invested, hemp paper production threatened his empire so he hired anslinger to lie to congress about it.
the same exact time anslinger was lying about "marijuana" the AMA was studying cannabis for it's medicinal uses.
Do you even know why it was criminalized in the first place? Big Pharma.

Both are correct
No, both are not correct. Big pharma had nothing to do with criminalizing it in the first place, in the 30s.

The current situation is a completely separate topic. "Criminalized in the first place" was what my comment pertained to.
You're all three correct.
That was part of the same smear campaign

I always heard it was made illegal because it was used more by blacks and Hispanics.
I just searched and there is evidence to support that.
