Thank you! I cringe whenever I hear or read that! I even told my wife that when she casually says "Lord", it is taking the Lord's name in vain. She realized I was right.
Exactly. I have a habit of saying “oh Lord” myself. And I’m trying to break that as well. Satan thinks it’s funny I’m sure for us to fall into these habits. But the GD words really goes up my spine. Hate to see people casually use it, in most likely a harmless way because, of old habits die hard. But it’s is hurtful to our Lord and disrespectful. So I feel the need to call it out, and hope others call me out as well. Let us honor and worship Him, not disrespect, myself included. Even if we mean no harm.
Think I’m gonna go with “my goodness”, or just “goooodness” or maybe what someone else has said in my life, “goooood niiiight”, kinda thing. 👍
"Lord" isn't God's name. Even "God" isn't God's name. They're words used by men to describe something which is indescribable. God tells Moses "I am that I am". That's as close as we get to His name.
Did some research because of your comment, found some very interesting info. Thank you for posting.
It seems there are many references to God, the Father, and what his worshippers call Him. But as you said “I Am” is what he told Moses. So for us, references will have to do. And in that view I still feel if someone is using even a reference of the Lord’s name in vain, it still counts as so. But as some have already mentioned, it’s not the only way to place the Lords name in vain, actions do as well.
Very good info out there. Thank you. 👍
I find it unusual people consider mentioning His name a sin. To take something in vain isnt to just use it. That is (to me at least) a conceit of the same church which is openly defying His will, and has been acting in defiance of it for hundreds of years.
To take His name in vain is to disrespect and put into disrepute said name. Saying He demands someone to die, or that a sin like false idol worship (ie faith in government) is "His will" - that is to take his name in vain.
The good Lord ideally would damn communism and all those brutal atrocities it committed. It is the work of the devil, and a false idol. For communism demands faith and fear in the state, rather than faith and fear of the Lord. Such things deserve damnation.
I see what your saying, it’s interesting. A point a view I think some should consider. I think what we are referring to is, for instance if my car had a flat tire, and I yell out Damn you Steve! Then I lost my hat in the wind, Steve, damn you! Then a day later I bit my lip at lunch, Steve damn!
Steve is getting a lot of hate here. I would think eventually someone would ask, whose Steve? But in this case people have become used to others saying God, or Jesus Christ. It’s insulting to Steve I’m sure, even if we don’t mean to actually be blaming Steve personally. But I’m sure Steve would rather us not do it. And in the case of Jesus Christ, someone we love with no end, it’s horrible for shim to hear. Even if it’s just a bad habit. Out of love, I hope to never let a bad habit hurt Him in anyway. For what He does for me, it would kill me if I even accidentally did this.
i don't mean to, but it's a habig I have obtained from 1. working around dirtbags, 2. getting pissed off myself. I follow God and pray for him to intervene in these times.
I hear ya brother, Amen.
