From what I understand about cable TV technology (very limited) is that the signal is sensitive because it's cramed full of data into a limited frequency range.
When these emergency broadcasts go across they can sometimes lock up subscriber boxes (cable box) becasue it overloads the frequency just enough to trigger some mechanism to shut down the data stream. Our cable box does this sometimes when there is a really long alert.
Looks like this "test" will be 5minutes long. That could definitely trigger many boxes to lock up.
Yep. When they say "emergency broadcast" thats those anoying loud alerts that have the computerized voice that runs a ticker across the bottom with information. Those only happen if you have a cable box for cable TV. I imagine same for Sattelite (I don't have one so I dont know)
Streaming stuff is based off the internet. Even though you might have cable internet (and a cable modem box) alerts will not scroll across your computer screen from your cable provider.
Now with the streaming stuff I don't know how they handle alerts. Maybe they could be pressured from the FCC to comply and add the alert to their streams. Or maybe the source stream they get migth have the broadcast and they have no choice in the matter.
I live in a flood prone area. We get alerts all the time here. Never had an alert last for 5 minutes. That's way too long, might as well just cut into a live broadcast from the local news desk.
From what I gather from the ex ..that's all very odd. The 5 minutes the need to reboot. What good is EBS alerts say in tornados where you could have multiple back to back spawning n alerts following suit.yould only get 1 need to reboot? Then start again?
That's illogical and wholly inefficient.
Anyone go to fema.gov for more information yet to save me the trip?
See what's on fema.gov about it .
We have had a few of these tests in UK. It's a global message standard so exactly same on my UK chinese phone as it is on your US chinese phone.
Only started recently though and in small areas of the country. I guarantee most people have no idea there even is such a system. US gets them in English and Spanish but we get them in English and Welsh. They are pretty scary as there is a max volume very loud discordant tone then Google text-to-speech starts yelling at me in English or Welsh, again max volume.
Will be kinda weird if we simultaneously get messages at 14:00 EST on Aug 11 which I think is 19:00 BST (18:00 UTC/Zulu.) In fact if that happens I think we're gunna know it's not really a test.
why would you need to reboot your tv?
software update?

So this only applies to cable tv then? I don't have cable or satellite. Streaming thorugh roku.

Hold on, FIVE MINUTES?!?! I can't remember a test alert lasting that long, Is that normal? You can say a LOT in five minutes. Just a thought there...
il Donaldo could lay quite a smackdown in cinco minutos

Wonder what Mike Lindell is announcing at his symposium at 2:20 pm on the 11th? Or will EBS be the destraction narrative of the day.
My thoughts too
Hmm? Government doing something in regards to spying on us through TV? Why the reboot?
Maybe a reboot is JUST a a reboot. Maybe the mass signal sent to the boxes will screw up your individual pay per view packages.

Oh sorry I asked that after you.

The time is still set for 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 11. Nothing was said about rebooting equipment, though.

You have to reboot? Seems like they’re doing more than just a test.
