I couldn't find this photo being used in MSM, so I did a bit of digging to see if it might be a fraud (edited photo), since my first thought was, how easy is it for someone to upload to Getty Images? You need to upload sample images which are reviewed by a human, so it's not like you can just create an account and start uploading.
The photographer is listed as Ed Jones (unless the photographer is actually "Pool" and was born on the south side of Chicago, does skateboarding, civil war, I don't know man). I can find several other photos by Ed Jones in the MSM, based around New York, here, here and here, all around the New York area. Two of those are with AFP (Agence France-Presse).
Searching for "Ed Jones AFP" gets to his instagram page which says he formerly worked in Korea, among other places, which also suggests this AFP page is also his (although out of date).
tl;dr: as far as I can see, this looks like a legit photo.

Another anon already pointed out that it looks like a band-aid, with the rounded end pointing towards his eye. The squared part of the bandaid sticks out a little then goes into the ear. Apparently wearing masks can irritate the skin. It's obviously not a mask.
