I keep asking people to define hate speech.

You can really trip them up doing that because they can only give examples, not a definition. If they do give a definition then I tell them their responses are hate speech.

Yes Hate crimes are only ACTIONS taken against somebody. Words are not actions, hurting feelings is not a crime.

Beating a person because of their skin color IS a hate crime. Calling them a racial slur is just rude.
