I'm unsure about a control group type situation, but its more likely a simple "we don't want to have a large noticeable spike in deaths".

Not if they can spread out the deaths over successive booster shots.

Massive resistance is what they were trying to avoid.

I don't have the sauce, but I thought I heard that they found different types of shots in Japan.

It's quite possible there are several different "batches".

And we're uncertain about the exact number of saline shots there actually are.
