When you say unprecedented, how far from the average is it? I'm wondering if it's 2x, 3x+, or if it's just above average.
At the equivalent time in the run up to the 2020 election there were 8 dems and 20 republicans that had called it quits. This year there are 18 dems and 11 republicans.

Over twice as many and it's not even primary season
Considering some of these rats have been in power for 40 years or more, I'd guess it's well above average.
But I would have research it. I don't recall such a time when so many weren't seeking reelection in a single cycle.
