Do you know what is the difference between Asperger's and Tourettes? My step daughter is slightly autistic and has overcame a lot of things. She graduated from High School where she won a Scholarship and attended college with an Associates degree. She now has started doing a hum after every sentence. Just wondering which one it is. She works in a small restaurant and I am wondering how that hum is going to affect her job performance. Thanks for any info. God bless.
I think they are both on the so called "spectrum". My only troublesome manifestation that I am aware of is inappropriate (not profane) "outbursts". These are usually related to things I find humorous but others don't seem to understand.
Okay. All I know is out of the blue she started this HUM at the end of her sentences. She also has this thing that makes her look like she's looking up inside her head; which is weird. I know she can't help it and we are very proud of her for all she has overcame. I just don't want her to have a life long struggle with some new obstacle everytime she overcomes one. Thanks and God bless you again. Have a great day.
I have OCD, and I believe to a degree "tourettes", but many of these things manifest in unusual ways. It's not always textbook (Im an RN as well). As an example, when I was younger I would get very strong compulsions to make these "growling" type sounds every once in a while. I'm sure she is aware of it but it is nearly excruciating to ignore the ticks when one is starting. I have somehow grown out of most all of my ticks and am fairly "normal" now. I get it though, the thought to hum is likely all consuming and will drive her frantic if she doesn't complete it.
Thank you for your help. I'm not sure if she realizes she does it because it happens at the end of every sentence. It's like she's humming a tune inside her head and then it comes out at the end of her verbal sentence. She also looks at herself a lot in the living room mirror or wherever a mirror might be. It's not like a young girl would look at herself so it's kind of hard to explain. It doesn't bother me but I notice a lot of her peculiarities when they occur. I'm praying that like you, she too will overcome most of them and become her own normal too. God bless and thanks for sharing. And God bless you for overcoming all your hurdles in life that passed your way. Take care.
Victoria is a very sensitive young lady. She doesn't like it if I mention to someone she is 'slightly' autistic and she comes into the room and overhears me. I have upset her several times about it. I tell her it is nothing to be ashamed of, but somehow I still feel as if she is upset with me for having mentioned it.
She is a firm believer in Christ as she was raised in church. She met a man there years ago/ when he was a teenager and she was still a little girl; whom she has reconnected with. She is 23 and he is 30 now. He has a slight learning disability and does NOT drive a car. He lives in the next town and Victoria who does DRIVE/ something I never thought she'd do, goes and picks him up every weekend. They are planning on getting married. When; I do not know. But I am proud of her even if I am not her mother. Her mother died in September of this year at the age of 56. It was a shock to everyone. This has been a very hard Holiday season for her as her birthday was also in November. I simply sit and talk to her about what to expect and pray that everything turns out for her.
But I am sure Victoria knows she is different from others. There is no need for me to point it out to her, I am sure other people do that on a daily basis. Which I think is heartbreaking; but she has to learn to stand on her own two feet. All we can do is be there for her if ever she needs us. Amen
God bless you for dealing with your difference. You did not have to tell me as I would never have known. There are imperfections in all of us, if we all just look. There is none of us perfect, and that is what God made us to be. Amen
Looking up inside her head? Like her eyes roll all the way up, or she just looks up for a few seconds? One of my oldest friends has what are called 'away seizures' due to epilepsy. He'll look up for a few seconds, then he sort of comes back to us, blinking and getting back in to the conversation.

Please make her aware of it somehow. I didn't find out I was "different" until very late in life. Now I try to catch myself.

Sort of like that.
I am praying for you and her🥰 What a strong person you must be.
Thank you and God bless you. We can all use many prayers.
