And yes of course on apartments, but fortunately only one brief stint in one with interior hall/doors, usually front door has gone to the outdoors or at least a breezeway. I imagine internal kind would be hell for both odor and noise reasons.
It was an acquired taste for me; probably like how I couldn't stand beer in High School and thought Budweiser was extremely strong at the time :) (I recently had a can after about 40 years and thought it was about as strong as Coors light :) )
I started with liking Pink Floyd and King Krimson, and Steely Dan, and then went to "Return to Forever" and "Weather Report", and later to what is considered "real jazz". I may have grown into it because my Dad played jazz albums when I was growing up (but I hated it then :) ).
Yeah some acquired tastes I've acquired - sometimes even over great periods of time/difficulty. The Dan was one - I had a friend that was like "I can't believe you don't like these guys" but after hearing "Reelin in the Years" 800000 times on AOR growing up I was like meh. He kept insisting, playing different cuts. It was gradual.
That said, yeah tweedly stuff I just can't do, I don't see acquiring the taste for much jazz being likely (or a priority).
Pink Floyd I've heard so many times I just don't care, and I do appreciate Crim quite a bit (esp 80s thru oh around Power to Believe, a great album IMO - interesting what they did with drums and programming. Fucking weirdos LOL. I was hoping to see them someday but now that Belew's out of the picture, he was one of the best parts....)
I appreciate Weather Report and tried to get into them, but it's really at the "couple of tracks" level. I have a book about Jaco, pretty fascinating (and tragic story) read. I still plan on getting a fretless bass on general principle but everything like that's been on sort of hold thru wartime here.
LOL definitely agree on free-form (or in fact most) jazz, curry spice tho???
Ever live in an apartment building? Everything smells like curry all the time. It ruined curry chicken for me.
I can see that. SAD!

Just listen to Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" album (well, CD now), and you might consider giving jazz another chance :)
Nope, I can't stand him. I can handle Brubeck and (cheating) Steely Dan/Zappa. That's about it.

I didn't downpoot this btw, no idea what bot fag would downpoot an opinion, though I guess somewhere in there I answered the question.
