His unit quickly joined the detachment of Ukrainian troops heading to defend the Gostomel airport. ✔️ Jason recalled: “It was a very confusing situation. Nobody really knew what was going on. As we headed out into the darkness, I think it's fair to say that I got scared. Anyone who gets into a position where they are not afraid is a liar. When we arrived it was very quiet. But suddenly the gates of hell opened before us. ✔️ A squadron of Russian aircraft fired missiles, then a fleet of attack helicopters joined them. Jason and ten soldiers from the "Georgian Legion" took refuge in the forest. Jason, who served in the Mercian Regiment, added: “We were very close to dying. I have never experienced that kind of firepower, I don't think anyone in this generation has ever experienced it. Iraq and Afghanistan were completely different. The Russians are the modern army." ✔️ Then reinforcements arrived with Stinger missiles to destroy the Russian helicopters in a brave display of Ukrainian resistance. But Jason and his American buddy were arrested by Ukrainian agents looking for Russian saboteurs. He said: “My friend and I had a bag with two walkie-talkies and a small pistol. We needed them if the communication network failed, but the agents suspected something was wrong. ✔️ They were taken to the security base and interrogated for three hours. Jason said: “One of the guards hit me on the head. Then another guy came, and from his kit, I realized that he was in an elite unit. They kept yelling at me in Russian, but apparently I said I was English. They hit me about eight or nine times. I had a pretty bad concussion and was bleeding a lot."
