What if these fires/food destruction is actually the destruction of poisoned food. (they weren't just floating the 'vaccine-infused' food idea, they were trying to sell it.)
Seems reasonable to me they see the tide turning against them and this was the way to disarm that weapon. They unloaded half a clip at the target and it appears bulletproof...maybe if they drop the clip and un-chamber their round they'll see mercy? Probably not, but certainly isn't going to help to keep shooting.
Personal/local food production does need to increase, so there is a positive spin even if this all proves to be fear-mongering. [Not so easy to say, 'relax it might not be that bad' when either way the pressure is somewhat needed to get more people to start gardening/shepherding.]
Many of them would freak out not knowing how to make a cheeseburger or chicken nuggets without a microwave, or how to survive without cereal or starbucks.
Oh I know as I am prepared and ready to make it 3-4 months without a grocery store run. I am quietly telling people I know is to buy 2 of each item when making grocery store runs in case they are not aware or notice their pantry is bare.
So, I have been thinking about this with regard to all of these factories being blown up.

Get 3-5 little banti hens. You will end up parking a chair and watching them for hours. Guaranteed.
Everyone loves silkies. I haven't had any, but in your setting I cannot imagine better birds.

Once they are a few months old, chickens are flighty enough cats don't bother. Don't let cats into the brooder.
We have a pile of both out there, it's never come up.
We had a dog that was an egg eater and another that just plain liked killing chickens, but the cats have always been cool. 👍

HOA won't allow farm animals. But we want chickens to keep ticks and ants in check. What kind a 'fancy' chicken would not be considered a farm animal?
