Here is a real-life scenario to consider: Cars and trucks were stopped on I-10 outside Kerrville Texas (in the Texas hill country) in freezing conditions for 17 plus hours in early February after a couple of 18 wheelers jackknifed. There were no wreckers in 100 miles that could handle 18 wheelers, so the sun had to come out and ice had to melt so they could reach the blockage. Even after traffic began to move the next day, it took many hours before the miles of stopped vehicles got to safe open road. At the end of the wait, the emergency personnel were able to bring gasoline to those who ran out trying to keep warm and alive overnight. I was there and lucky. By the grace of God, I was stopped in traffic just shy of the first Kerrville exit and was able to reach it by driving a couple hundred yards on the icy shoulder of a bridge to the exit. Most were not so fortunate and had to tough it out on the highway. After that experience no electric vehicles for me. To my way of thinking, after you run out of juice trying to keep warm there is not one thing emergency services can do for you; gas won't help you. I guess after the traffic has cleared and a wrecker becomes available you can get your vehicle moved to a charging station at considerable expense.

People could car hop as cars usually have 2 or 3 empty seats to share the heat. The problem is when an engine isn't running the oil thickens and the cold cranking amps may not be enough to start it back up.

But used electric vehicles still aren't no where near as cheap as used gas cars after 10 years.

I would say for homes with a garage it favors electric since most of us keep the car “topped up” to 80% every night instead of once a week.

The new f150 lightning (electric) will have a 240v outlet in the bed as a option. (120v outlets are standard). Ford says they can transfer 20 miles of range to an electric mustang per hour using it. So electric vehicle owners will have options beyond towing.

I absolutely love my plug-in hybrid car.

And I think that when they improve battery tech, the writing will be on the wall for the internal combustion engine.

It's only a matter of time. You can't stop it, even with memes.

It isn't about saving the planet. It is about near-zero maintenance. It is about never having to stand in the whipping snow or rain while filling your gas tank. It is about smooth a quiet acceleration. The electric car is going to win in the marketplace.

I can get a gas can in an emergency. You will need a gas can, a gasoline generator, and a long ass time to charge that battery. Good luck. Ever look up a EV1 ? Chevy made a good electric city car decades ago.

The ev1 had a 100 mile range only achieved by driving as slow as possible, 2 seats, 3 hour charge time to 80% battery and it looked awful then and still looks awful today. All for $35k in 1997. If you wanted a 2 seat city car you could have bought a BMW Z3, Porsche Boxter or a Honda S2000 for roughly the same price.

It was a shitty car by any means, electric or gas. It hurt public perception on electric cars more than it ever helped.

Today, the new f150 lightning can be equipped with a 240v outlet in the bed capable of adding 20 miles of range per hour to the electric mustang ford says. It’s not perfect but it beats towing. I suspect once electrics become more common, dedicated “supercharger” trucks will become a thing.

I guess you haven't seen the newspaper articles from 1927 showing electric delivery trucks that had the batteries replaced in less than 5 minutes. Same old tired shit, new generation of fucking idiots.

Been hearing that for 20 years. How many more decades until "they improve battery tech" enough to matter? Meanwhile, gas engines continue to improve as well.

It's not an electric car. It's a coal powered car.

And who stands outside in the rain and snow to pump gas? I get back in the vehicle and sit down.

I'm not a sandal-wearing eco-freak. I didn't get my plug-in hybrid because I have some half-assed notion that I'm 'saving the planet'.

That said, my power comes from the Niagra River, not coal.

I've had to get gas for my car maybe 6 to 10 times over the last three years. My electricity is very cheap and I basically drive for free. All I do is plug it in when I get home.

This is the way of future, you can't stop it.

Are there electric four wheel drive vehicles? I am in ND this last winter was colder than hell I lost track of how many days were below zero with the high of 15 below. When it did warm up it snowed, I don't know if I could trust an electric vehicle, also I'm glad we have a four wheel drive Explorer XLT for those situations.

A hybrid might be workable if they have decent trucks.

Yes, battery tech needs to improve, as I stated. And it will improve. It always has.

I was around in the days when there were only two mass market battery types. Lead-acid and carbon-zinc.

There is a lot to be said for electric cars. Companies for years have been going to electric vehicles like forklifts and maintenance cars. Much less maintenance and things to fix, cheaper on fuel. If they ever made a decent, affordable daily driver electric I'd jump right on it. I'd daily the hell out of it and have it just eat up miles taking me to work, the grocery store, etc. And save my gas powered van for the weekends and road trips.

Electric forklifts are designed for operations indoors, nothing to do with economics. No fumes, expensive batteries

You're talking fantasy and being egotistical about it. A gas engine, you know, with explosions in it, rapidly heats a volume of liquid that will stay warm for a while and provide heating without constant fuel use. Meanwhile, an electric vehicle has to constantly burn off electricity to make heat - which, by the way, is a very inefficient use of electricity. Gas vehicles don't lose a bit of range or run time to heating (in fact, they are overflowing with excess heat when running and have to constantly offload it), while an electric car eats its own range to make heat. It's not even close.

Well sir, you are wrong. An electric vehicle, approximately 1.5-2.5 kW of heater draw in outside temperatures from 35 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. With 100% charge on a 32kWh battery, translates to between 21 hours of heat on a 15-35 degree day. A vehicle strictly operating on Gasoline - using a V6 engine with a 15 gallon tank will run at idle with the heat on using 0.5 gallons of fuel every hour, the colder the outside temp the less it will consume fuel, 15 gallons = 30 hours, your meme idea doesnt hold water, the vehicle runs 9 hours longer than your EV. I love people that think they know everything, but really don't, they spend most of their life walking around on this earth pointing out wtf they think is idiodic and unethical, when all they have to do is NOT be that way. Do you think I give a shit to offer you or anyone else safety advice about a shitty idea for a powertrain vehicle that you are considering? gheez....

There is an upcomming electric car, the Aptera, that also has solar panels that can give you 20-40 miles a day just through solar energy

Correct me if I am wrong. An electric vehicle only needs to heat the passenger space a gas vehicle need the engine running dumping heat out the exhaust and heating the engine compartment as well.
