Dang, I'm pretty sure I read this book when 21 still sounded like a lifetime away. (In the book it's 21 not 30). I need to get a copy to go with my Brave New World and 1984 on the shelf.
There was another one I read back in school..wish I could remember the name of it. What I can remember is people basically had a handful of different masks to wear and to be part of society you had to choose one. Singing and etc was Outlawed.
I tried to search around a bit for it but because "mask" I just kept getting things about the chin diaper

Sounds a little like "The Moon Moth" by Jack Vance.
Edit: Synopsis - "Sirenese cover their faces and heads with exquisitely crafted masks that indicate their social status (strakh) and mood. They also communicate by singing, accompanying themselves with one of a score of musical instruments, selected based on the social situation and feelings. Furthermore, errors of etiquette may prove fatal."

Was that story "Harrison Bergeron," by Kurt Vonnegut? Could be something you might have read in school.

A bit, but in this one it was a small selection of masks to pick from and singing (all expression really) was banned
