I wonder who I can check with? I live in NY and about 13 years ago I got arrested for a traffic violation- Ive had absolutely nothing on my record since, not even a ticket. I wonder if Id be disqualified from a handgun license?
Yeah, I had a few beers and got caught in a speed trap. I blew a .11 so I was arrested and picked up by a friend. Never saw a jail cell. I took care of everything, did all my legal stuff, got a fine and Ive never gotten arrested/ticketed in the past 13 years. I genuinely dont even know if thats still on my record but I dont really want to spend the 20$ to run a BG check on myself.
Check the new law once they clarify it. Most states tell you that you can't get a permit if you have a felony, or possibly a high level misdemeanor, and possibly domestic violence or restraining orders. Depends on the law.
In TX you have to wait 5 years after a conviction for a Class A or B misdemeanor before you can apply again. Felony convictions or domestic violence convictions (even misdemeanors) disqualify you forever. In fact family violence convictions take your gun rights away at the Federal level.
A DUI in TX will suspend your permit for 5 years if you have one, or keep you from getting one for 5 years. You get a 2nd DUI in 10 years and no more permit ever.
