I always knew I had a high IQ, for whatever that's worth, but this whole thing has taught me that wisdom/understanding is really more about a) having discernment b) being capable of not following the herd c) not being easily hypnotized.
Most of what we see is a function of zero discernment, going along with artificially boosted beliefs or having been put into a hypnotic-like, non-thinking state by media.
Intelligence has some to do with it, but it definitely isn't everything.
Very, very insightful. Perfectly aligns with my thoughts, but you said it better than I could.
My eyes really weren’t open to how the world really works until I started fighting gun control legislation in my mid 20’s. It snowballed from there. I wasn’t into politics at all until I started to see how my gun rights were being infringed. I guess my personality lended itself for me to be an independent thinker though as I never followed any clicks in school and I followed my own path not giving a crap what others thought of me. Visualize a hardcore punk rocker in a redneck school….Yeah, I had my share of confrontations.
The word you were looking for was cliques. Not posting this to bash anything you said, fren.
Yeah, was lazy and didn’t feel like looking it up. Knew it wasn’t right.
I would add:
d) having a bit of courage to face the ugly truth
True based on my observation. I believe being susceptible to suggestion is a biological or chemical predisposition, much like being predisposed to addiction. There are far too many really smart people who will believe and say really dumb things.
I once read a theory that there are three types of highly gifted people: Superstars, Strivers and Independents. The first two are more likely to conform even though they are equally smart and go on to achieve highly in their chosen fields.
Yup.
The world really doesn't seem to like independent thinkers UNLESS they provide/invent/develop something novel that will benefit them. Even then, they ask, "What have you done for me lately?", and throw the independent thinker to the curb if he doesn't keep delivering things that benefit them.
