Generally people trying to cross the desert die of the desert. That's the actual problem, there's even signs in Spanish warning people not to attempt crossing it.
I'm not sure what the local geography is like - I'm assuming that crossing point is used because the stretch of desert is less or something. I have to get to work here now so just throwing this out there for further discussion/if people want to dig on it a bit or whatever.
