The devil's not smiling and the guy doesn't look like he's distressed, he looks like he's thinking and plotting. And he has a pleasant smile on his face. He knows what's up.
No, the White side has a choice of strong moves to make to avoid Check and then Mate.....
Black has 3 moves to Win, but his pieces are in perilous positions....
If we begin with White Castling on Kings side, Black has to readjust all of his pieces to regain the advantage, meanwhile, White just takes and takes and takes....
For instance, some people have claimed that the square in the bottom right-hand corner of each player is black which is incorrect - and not how the picture appears to me but they do talk about an engraving so maybe they looked at this and not this or this?
Note: two similar pictures have shadows in different directions.
I can't even work out which pieces are which, however, both players have, on the back row, a piece on its own colour which means it is not an unmoved king so castling will not be possible.
I'm taking the simplest approach, going according to the setup displayed by Chas. A. Gilberg......
I'm not at all versed on the History of the Game, nor the evolution of the Pieces, so, it's possible we are seeing pieces that once existed, but now have changed.....
The King has the final move
In chess, kings never have the final move - unless you count being knocked over.
King I refer to is not a board game
Good point and such but the unneeded yelling always bothers me
Cheaters must forfeit.
Nice....
Very cool - thank you for sharing! I will pay it forward Fren…

Check for the letter of Mr Harrison about his encounter with Mr Morphy.
Talk about " zugzwang" and nothing can stop what is coming, and checkmate.
And yet, the story goes .... Morphy found a way .... Not once but several times, according to Mr. Harrison.
So, the king has one more move then he loses. I don't think that will remove the smile from the Devil's face.

There seems to be quite a lot written about this picture. However, there appears to be a number of pictures.
For instance, some people have claimed that the square in the bottom right-hand corner of each player is black which is incorrect - and not how the picture appears to me but they do talk about an engraving so maybe they looked at this and not this or this?

Anyway, I'm not going down that rabbit hole.....
