The proper - and kinder - term is “foreign national”. If the left wants to buffer the term “illegal alien”, that’s fine, but they are in no way, shape, or form “immigrants”! And it’s disrespectful to anyone, from ANY Country going to ANY Country, who has submitted to the lengthy and not inexpensive legal process to obtain status in a Country they weren’t born into.
