solar panels are great for prep - quiet electricity is the only electricity you can have when the SHTF.
And you can buy a pallet of 95% panels used for less than a thousand bucks. Another 1500 for a good off grid inverter
Batteries though. Fuck, they are expensive!
But still. Nice to have
They work great after a hurricane rips them from your roof.
Reccomend a hybrid system. My f150 is my generator. I have patriot power 1800 w battery generator for rhe freezer. Managed properly I can get 2 days out of it and the. Four hours plugged into my truck and its recharged again.
Repeat.
When you have 100% cloud cover for days on end in the middle of a storm?
but not last minute sruff. plus the roof mounted ones often fky away in high winds..
You can have loud energy in SHTF, if you have loud defenses to protect it.
Side benefit: vermin that will not return after extermination .
Good point.
Windmill go brrrrrr... That's some big brain thinking there until airborne debris takes it out.
The hurricane. I remember those. Hot humid air gathers around to make a storm.
It's been 8 hours since the rain started. I only have a small puddle on the driveway. Where is the water I see falling? I've got a jacket on for this burst of hot air? Its 55 degrees out with no warm air in sight. They dont make them like they used to.
This seems like a pretty good place to post my recent hurricane experiences with my neighbors... Boy did they disappoint.
We kept power the entire time. Never really suffered. I was actually out and about in the car a good portion of the actual storm. Nothing crazy, but I was out there because I had to be. So I saw what was actually going on on the roads, etc. Wasn't much in our area, to be honest. We definitely got lucky.
After the storm, everyone was gathered around like crazed ants, picking up what little debris they had from the storm. One neighbor lost a wall of his 20 year old fence. That was the worst of it.
The hectic energy was PALPABLE and disturbing. I was sitting in the front porch while my kid played in the mud. People kept coming up to me, telling me what a horrible disaster it was "out there". People up to their necks in water! Whole swaths of road out! Armageddon!
I asked "What? Where are you talking about? I've been out a lot during the storm (running stuff to shelters) and saw very little of this."
My functional, first hand experience was more than completely ignored - it went completely unregistered. Eyes turned blank the moment they heard me speak. The wheels turns slowly in their heads as their minds literally crawled over and around what I'd just said to them. I was at the shelters. I was on the roads. What?
Most people just stopped the conversation and went back to raking up debris. Only one person bothered to carry on conversation beyond this point. She told me "you really need to watch the TV! It's a disaster out there!"
I said "Well, we don't have a TV..."
She got in her car and left, to go randomly drive around seeking out fear porn.
It was surreal. We still have a long way to go to wake up these people.
To add another facet to the fear porn I heard last night that the bird flu ( not the destruction of God plants) has driven the price of turkeys up to $6.++/l ...seriously they are grabbing past crisis that they can (un)reasonably link/apply and throwing it into the mix...
Yeah where the center hit they got brutalized.
Where I am we lost a bunch of trees limbs and that was about it. Strangely we noticed there wasn't as much rain as we thought. Top wind gust were maybe 70 mph. Caught the very edge of top side so we were lucky too.
island_Photo...YOU win the Internet for the day with this INSIGHTFUL SCREED!!!!!!
There are NOT enough up votes too give you...
Ppl here in Florida fell in love solar panels, well...some have been damaged and my first question is: Did your insurance company cover them?
Their response: "HUH?"
Gotta luv stupid!!!
I like to have all options. Anything wrong with using more than one basket to carry the eggs? If one fails, use the other.
Why is this community so anti-solar? I don’t get it, it’s like half of you have some weird gasoline fetish. What’s wrong with free renewable energy? It’s not like inorder to like Solar you have to hate gasoline or something. They both have various benefits, there’s nothing wrong with Solar. Being so anti-solar for no damn reason just makes us look like hicks lol
I would do a hybrid system. Not grid connected. Plenty of ways to Charge batteries.
I've owned solar in nevada. It was never going to pay for itself. I sold the house so the cost are now rolled into the new owners mortgage and as long as the house keeps increasing in value they'll do ok. As in zero electric bill, cost 11 bucks a month to be connected. Also, you can not seperate it from the grid and you have no power if the power goes down. Still not gonna pay for the system, But they'll notice less. For the. It will seem free. The initial investor loses.
I have my own solar disconnected from the grid; I don't care about it paying for itself, me using any form of energy already doesn't pay for itself, it is nice though not being dependent on the grid, with something that's infinitely renewable (a generator will run out of gas after a few days, my panels will work for decades)
I like to have power when it’s cloudy/at night, thank you. MTG feels the same way.
shocker
