Mental Illness and drug use of one form or another is endemic among homeless populations.

Part of why no one has been able to “Solve” Homelessness. The common trope portrayed in film/T.V of homelessness being due to a run of bad luck outside of someone’s control. Is comparatively uncommon in comparison to people being homeless due to drugs habits, mental illness, or both. Though people frequently look at through the eyes of the trope. Instead of painful reality.

It’s not a problem that can be solved by dealing out houses or tossing money at it. And due to laws passed by people who “meant well”. The process of getting someone forcibly committed. Even if they pose a threat to others. Is an extremely difficult an arduous process. That doesn’t always guarantee a long term stay.

It was a random incident that might once have been discussed by a group of dog owners. But now it had a forum for a much wider community, with arguments about policing, vigilantism, homelessness, mental health care and progressive obstinacy all feeding into a conversation that evolved beyond the crime that set it off.
