This is just plays into identity politics. What about instead of calling people like African American or Mexican American we started calling them American African to mess with them and say that being American is more important so that part has to go first. They want to clown world our language so can we.
I agree in some ways with this - and admit that it does play into identity politics a bit. but the thing is that's the game which is being played right now. It's a bad game to play but look around - every group gets a shiny label they can embrace and celebrate for a whole month every year - every group but one.
Part of that has been accepting the label which has been forced upon us, which is now so dragged through the mud that it has become a bad-word and certainly not associated with anything good,.
So instead we should simply, calmly, firmly be demanding the correct term be used. It's a self respect thing.
What about us mutts with Scottish, English and Cherokee heritage? My ancestors fought and screwed their way through Europe and the English isles, then fought and screwed their way onto the North American continent. I guess I’m half European-American, half American-American?
Your genetics are European, so that's where the label comes from. I guess if you have a certain amount of cherokee you could claim that too, but if the bulk of your genes are from Europe well that's what you are
Many people will have some mixture to be certain, and that's to be expected, but if you're majority European and don't strongly identify with the other portions then that's what you are
I’ll go first- proud American from English/Scottish/maybe Welsh and a tad of German (family history—not doing the DNA test (sister did it and is wondering who the Scandinavian in the family is —shows 1 member— shes vexed because I refuse to do the dna— I’ve told them all since I was ten — in the only Viking in the family 😁
Definitely British Isles background if using the word “vexed”. Love that word. Same with “whilst”. Let’s make language GREAT again!
I’m Canadian, of English/Scots/Irish/Welsh with a smattering of French, and Danish and Norwegian ancestry. Probably went A-Viking a time or two in my ancestry.
Nice to meet you, European-American, from a European-Canadian, and damn proud of it, too!
That's awesome. And a good idea I think each group within the 'European' larger group should have their sub-group if they want it. It's important to identify with your group, even with the area or region(s) that your family came from. That's a good thing.
But right now Irish-Americans are lumped into the 'white' category aren't they - so if the category name was upgraded like I'm proposing it would be good for them too.
I had an interesting idea. There are a bunch of abandoned mining towns across Canada. Have them be settled by a different European Nation. So you can visit a small section of that Nation inside tour Nation. It's a sample of what they do best. A fun touristy interaction. The conditions might be they to hire locals but also allow their key people to work so you start to connect on the cultural level.
I'm not saying don't have fun with other americans or people in general, great stuff. I'm just saying that the label 'white' is like the n-word now. It's a weak word. It's a word that came from God knows where and landed on our shoulders. It's been dragged through the mud by the media and every other zealot who wanted to blame someone for their own problems. Not only that, but it doesn't mean anything, it's the absence of meaning anything. It's a basic color of no color. You're not white... that isn't a thing. If your genes are European then yes sir you are of European ancestry whether you like it or not, so when they put together the little 'racial categories' which they do whethe you like it or not, then it should be labeled correctly at the very least. You ain't 'white'
Well police will still use the shorthand, as will a lot of people, but the official label should be corrected at the very least - and our way of thinking of ourselves should include our heritage and should not be cut off by the Atlantic ocean alone, especially when we went over to Europe only a short time ago to save their asses during WW2 and gave a lot of our guys to do it. So we have a right to our European roots and it should be something we're proud of, not something we just shrug off in the name of getting along or something like that.
I agree with you here - being out with our fellow countrymen enjoying a good game and everyone being, ya know, on each others team is a great way to spend a weekend. Just realize, that when you get home and things calm down, each one of those 'every color and religion under the sun' groups gets to still be on a team that they can identify with, that they can be proud of, that they can celebrate and that they can use to wield political power against... you, who has no group identity. So I'm not saying it's some great thing to have to do, but the fact remains that every single other group is doing it, except ours.

Majority European for sure. I have 2 great great grandmothers who were at least part Cherokee if not all. No one knows for sure.

Well there you go - a Viking-American!

Lol! My father told me to do the same thing. “You’re Polish, we’re a minority as well!” I hear by use this and fully believe in it
I'll do you one better. For those of us who have Anglo blood of the English can call ourselves Anglo Americans
that has a nice ring to it
Irish-Americans has a ring.
