Years ago, I read a piece about a party in New York City that Picasso attended in the early 50s. Picasso was either a bit tipsy or just didn't give a crap at that point but he claimed that he and several other artists cooked up the whole "modern art" thing as a scam. They knew how dumb some rich people were and figured out a new way of parting them from their money. He was laughing about it.
Having met a lot of artsy-types over the past couple of decades, it wouldn't surprise me at all. There's always been this sort of "nudge nudge wink wink" thing about the way the artists talk to the people with money and the way they talk amongst themselves. They are very very cautious about not upsetting the apple cart.
But a lot of Picasso's paintings are really cool. Maybe not worth what they sell for but awesome to look at.
The early ones are. The later abstracts...not so much.
It seems pretty obvious that Jackson Pollack came up with his splatter paintings for that very reason. I think he felt guilty about it though, and he died an alcoholic.
